I’ve always been a fan of a good bandanna. Something about them brings out a different era in my style, while also adding a fun touch to my wardrobe. I love wearing them around the house to feel a little more put together when I don’t want to put quite as much effort into my look. It’s a timeless fashion trend that is constantly coming back on the fashion wheel and stands the test of time right along with your favorite pair of worn out blue jeans. It’s a true Americana look that doesn’t fade.
While they are often used day in and day out among ranchers as wild rags, to wipe the sweat from a farmer’s brow, and back when homesteading mamas used to keep their curls back as they took clothes off the line, it’s also been a fashion staple among a slew of other types of folk. It’s now found it’s way to the more modern and trendy crowd and has been one of this year’s biggest trends. It’s a piece worn or used amongst both genders. I don’t think my grandfather has ever gone a day without a bandanna in his pocket to use as a “hankie.” It’s one of the things I remember the most about growing up around him. I personally have always had one in my drawer for a quick hair style when I’m in a pinch.
Here are a few ways that we love to style our bandannas:
This makes us channel our inner Rosie Riveter and one of my favorite ways to wear a bandanna. A fun way to wear your hair down, and if it’s in a mess, makes it look more styled. It’s such a retro look that never goes out and I prefer mine tied in a knot and a little off to the side. You can also wear the knot at the nape of your neck hidden by your hair if you prefer the “tie” to not show and more of a traditional headband look.
We love this classy look of the necktie! Such a sweet and simple look without trying too hard. It’s a great alternative to a statement necklace and is lightweight and comfy. Upgrade a your favorite tee or denim button down with a simple knot and you’ve got a fun look for a night out.
The Wild Rag
These aren’t always popular to wear as wild rags because of the smaller size and aren’t as thick as your traditional rags but nonetheless, if you are on a budget and don’t like that much bulk, this is a great way to get that cowgal feel.
A fun way to add a little sass to your outfit! I love the look of a bandanna on your write and you can obviously tie it in various ways than the way we have it styled below. If you don’t like it hanging, a fun knot or wrap would do. Think of it as a fun piece of jewelry!
Other Ways to Rock Your Bandanna
- Ponytail: I love the look of it tied around your pony tail to add some texture to your doo. It reminds me of a fun 50s vibe.
- Handbag: Add a pop of color to your handbag by tying a bandanna to your strap! Gives your leather bag some life and an updated look.
- Topknot: One of my top favorite ways to wear these, especially on a day that you don’t want to put a ton of effort into your hair but still need to have a polished look. Make a messy bun for a more retro feel.
- Half up/half down hairtstyle: This style is precious and one that I’ll be sporting a lot this fall. I like to wear my hair down a lot and like this option to add a little more to my regular, soft curled style. You can get two different looks to this one depending on how you fold it before you tie it in. Keep that in mind!
